Welcome to Piggery Poke.....where the adventure starts

Approaching Ynys Lochtyn on the all Wales Coast Path

Link to top of the page

Piggery Poke Hostel is a part of Cardigan Coastal Cottages which is the core of one of the Ffrwdwenith (wheat stream) farms situated four field back from the cliffs, in a village called Felinwynt (windmill). This is half way between Aberporth and Mwnt, four miles along the coast heading north from Cardigan.

The location provides a panoramic view of Cardigan Bay. From here we can see most of the coast up to Aberystwyth, Cader Idris, Snowdon, the higher parts of the Lleyn Penninsula, Bardsey Island and the Bardsey lighthouse. The Preseli Hills are just to the south of us and the beaches along this stretch of coastline are simply beautiful.

The Ceredigion Coastal Path has been extended, recently, and now joins Ynyslas (northern extreme of Ceredigion, near Borth) with Cardigan and the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path. Cardigan Coastal Cottages is situated on a loop from the path that links east of Mwnt to west of Parcllyn. Our hostel should prove popular with both walkers and cyclists passing this way.

Getting here

Driving here

There is a reasonably large sign at the top of the drive headed "Holiday accommodation" and showing the Cardigan Coastal Cottages logo. Entering the postcode SA43 1RW in to your satellite navigation system should bring you to the bungalow almost opposite the top of our drive. Some Satnav maps don't oblige and take you to a nearby business park instead. The map, below, shows our actual location - marked by the green pin.

We have plenty of off-road parking, level or very gently sloping, adjacent to each of our cottages and the hostel.

    Access statement

    General access to the site

Access to the site from the public road through Felinwynt via a 0.4 mile long farm track. The track surface is partially metalled, with the remainder being gravel and shale. For pedestrian access, see the section immediately above.

Car parking for the hostel is available either in the farmyard, which has a concrete surface and a 10% gradient, or on a gravelled area alongside the driveway which has a 15% gradient down to the coarse gravel path around the building. Access to the hostel is then as follows:

Access from the farmyard is over a 2m section of coarse gravel path, over a 180mm threshhold and through a pair of double doors with a maximum opening width of 125mm, into the kitchen/dining room

Access from the other side of the building is either:

through the kitchen/dining room door which involves negotiating a step of 75mm, then 175mm over a raised threshhold and through an 800mm wide doorway, or

through the 750mm wide hall doorway which has a 25mm threshhold

    Access within the hostel

Once inside the hostel, there are three, 200mm steps between the kitchen/dining room and hall. The hall gives access to the drying room, downstairs bunk room and staircase to the upper floor. The doorways in the rest of the hostel are 750mm wide. Access to the upper floor bedrooms is via an 800mm wide, single wind staircase.

    Access in dormitories:

The bunks in the ground floor bunkroom are set at 200mm and 1700mm heights. The toilet seat height is 400mm and the 900mm quadrant shower has a basin with a 250mm threshhold.

The beds and toilet seat height in the 5 bed, upstairs dormitory are 400mm and the 900mm quadrant shower has a basin with a 30mm threshhold. The en suite shower room door opens inwards and restricts space in this room.

The small, upstairs family bedroom has a triple bunk. The lower bunk is a double set at 200mm height, and the upper, single bunk, is set at 1700mm. The toilet seat height is 400mm and the 800mm square shower has a basin with a 150mm threshhold. The en suite door opens outwards, but space in this shower room is limited due to the shower door opening out into the en suite shower room.

The kitchen/dining room has plenty of space to manoeuvre. The height of the work surfaces and cooker is 900mm, the tables are 750mm high and the seating height is 430mm.
